The Wish

Can we just be real for a second

I say it in my own head

A little wish for myself

For you

To hold my hand close to your heart

And just be still with me a while

Let me feel it beat

Against the back of my hand

A determined pulse

Poetic and mechanical

And ultimately as real as this moment

That I would happily stop and revel in

For always or at least

Another five minutes

Please

I place my ear on your chest to hear it

And try to quiet my own breath a while

Caught up as it is in a small contented smile

I curl up like a cat and let you lift me

With the quiet consistent movement of your lungs

Filled up with comfort

And happy sighs

Your arms not frightened to hold me carefully there

And luxuriate in this reality

Even though if I think too much I am terrified

Slightly wide eyed

Can we just be real for a second

I say it in my own head

For a second or for much longer

I say it in my own head

Like a wish

For you

As you reel me back in to the moment

And I remember

What it is to be real

And what it is to mean something

To somebody

Again
